Signs of Carbon Monoxide Leaks in Your Home

  • Frequent Headaches and Dizziness: If you or your family members often experience headaches, dizziness, or nausea without a clear reason, it could be due to carbon monoxide exposure.
  • Flu-like Symptoms: Feeling unusually tired, weak, or confused can also be signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. These symptoms often mimic the flu but without the fever.
  • Breathing Problems: Shortness of breath or chest pain when indoors may indicate a carbon monoxide leak.
  • Yellow or Flickering Flames: Check your gas appliances. Flames should be blue. Yellow or flickering flames can mean incomplete combustion and potential carbon monoxide release.
  • Soot or Stains: Black, sooty stains around appliances, vents, or chimneys are warning signs of a leak.
  • Unusual Smells: While carbon monoxide itself is odorless, the presence of other combustion byproducts can create a musty or burning smell.
  • Condensation on Windows: Excessive moisture on your windows, especially near a gas appliance, can indicate a problem.

Common Questions About Carbon Monoxide Safety Inspections

Horne Heating and Air Conditioning is here to answer all your HVAC questions!

What is a carbon monoxide safety inspection?

A carbon monoxide safety inspection thoroughly examines combustion appliances in your home, such as furnaces and water heaters, to ensure they are functioning safely and not emitting dangerous levels of CO gas.

Why is a carbon monoxide safety inspection important?

CO is a gas that is odorless and colorless, and it has the potential to be lethal at large amounts. Regular inspections help detect leaks early, protecting you and your family from CO poisoning.

How often should I get a carbon monoxide safety inspection?

It’s recommended that annual CO safety inspections be performed, especially before the heating season begins. This ensures your appliances are safe and operating efficiently.

What appliances are checked during a CO safety inspection?

Inspectors check all combustion appliances, including furnaces, water heaters, gas stoves, and fireplaces, to ensure they are properly vented and operating without leaks.

What does a carbon monoxide safety inspector look for?

Inspectors look for signs of improper combustion, blockages in vents, and malfunctioning components that could lead to CO emissions.

Can I perform a carbon monoxide safety inspection myself?

It’s recommended that a certified technician be hired for CO safety inspections. They have the expertise and equipment to measure CO levels and detect potential hazards accurately.

How long does a carbon monoxide safety inspection take?

The duration of an inspection depends on the size of your home and the number of appliances being checked. On average, it can take one to two hours.

What should I do if carbon monoxide is detected during an inspection?

If CO is detected, evacuate your home immediately as well as get in touch with a trained technician to address the issue source of the leak. Ensure all windows and doors are opened to ventilate the area before returning.

Ensure your home is safe from carbon monoxide risks with Horne Heating and Air Conditioning Inc.’s professional CO safety inspection services. Contact us today to schedule your inspection and protect your family from this silent threat.

Andrew was extremely thorough, took many pictures and videos and reviewed the checkup steps with me. Even though some additional work is needed it was nice to actually understand the reasons why and the proof to back up the work needed. He also shared some previous work that was completed by the vendor used before I switched to Horne that was done incorrectly and frankly I’m not surprised. That vendor was just terrible and so glad I switched. A few days later, parts received earlier that expected. Andrew returned today and all is good. It was really nice to have the same technician return to complete the repairs. Thank you.

We had a fantastic experience with Horne! We purchased a home knowing the furnace (from 1982!) would need to be replaced pretty immediately. Our initial consultation with Nick was incredibly helpful. As first time home buyers he was patient and explained every detail to us and even pointed out things that didn’t need to be replaced immediately so we definitely did not feel like we were being sold to or pushed. Our installers Alex and Nick arrived on time, had the furnace installed within half a day and were courteous and respectful of our space and super accommodating on limiting disruptions considering my husband works from home. Even the reception staff I spoke to were kind and helpful and were super responsive and easy to communicate with via text or phone. We will absolutely continue using Horne for our HVAC needs. As first time home buyers it can be overwhelming trying to know what is the right and wrong call for big purchases, and honestly what some of the maintenance needs even are, so we are thrilled with the experience we had and would absolutely recommend them to anyone!
