Furnace filters help you manage the air quality in your Charlotte, North Carolina, home. The higher the number, the better the device’s ability to remove small particles. Even though higher values mean fewer contaminants pass through, the highest-rated types are not for residential use. A filter with a MERV rating between 1 and 12, will suffice for the average home.
Choosing the Right Type
If you live in an environment that is particularly dusty or you have pets, the filter you use will matter. The type of filter you choose is also important if persons in your home have respiratory problems or other illnesses. The most common filter options include:
- Disposable fiberglass: These filters have ratings of 1 to 4 and help to keep your HVAC system clean.
- Washable filters: Ratings for these reusable filters range from 1 to 4. Be sure to clean them regularly.
- Disposable pleated: This type is the most common and has MERV ratings from 1 to 13. You will need to replace these filters every one to three months.
